Step 3: your everyday way of eating

What to eat once you know what you tolerate, without staying on a narrow diet.

Using your reintroduction results, build your long-term diet: the most varied one that keeps your symptoms under control.

  • Fully bring back the FODMAPs you tolerated well.
  • Include the ones you partly tolerated in small portions or occasionally.
  • Set aside the ones that clearly triggered you, and retest them every 3-6 months: tolerance changes over time.

Tips for the long run:

  • Tolerance is cumulative: several "amber" foods in the same meal can add up and trigger symptoms. Spread FODMAPs throughout the day.
  • Stress, sleep and physical activity affect your gut as much as food does.
  • Eat the widest variety of tolerated plants you can: your microbiome will thank you.
  • If symptoms change or return over time, repeat a reintroduction test before restricting again on your own.

Remember: the end goal is not to eat "as little as possible", but the freest, most varied diet your gut allows. A registered dietitian can help you finish this phase properly.
